Trademark application reveals potential names for new NHL team in Utah
While no name has officially been chosen, a filing at the US Patent Office highlights some potential names for the NHL's newest team in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The owners of the NHL's newest hockey team, Ryan and Ashley Smith, have already stated they're in no rush to announce the nickname for their squad, and may even go into next season with no official name other than Utah. However, a report from DetroitHockey.net notes some possible names that were trademarked earlier this week.The filings were all done anonymously, and include five names meant to be trademarked for clothing. They are Utah Blizzard, Utah Venom, Utah Fury, Utah HC, Utah Hockey Club.
"On Tuesday, applications were filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office for trademarks on the following names:
Utah Blizzard
Utah Venom
Utah Fury
Utah HC
Utah Hockey Club
All of those have matching domain registrations that were made last week – anonymously, of course – and all of the domain registrations except for Blizzard seem to have been made by the same group."

Blizzard makes sense, as Utah is know for it's ski hills that get plenty of snow. It's average annual snowfall is 270 inches. As for Venom, Utah has a number of animal species that are poisonous. That includes scorpions, rattlesnakes, brown recluse spiders, blister beetles, and the hobo spider. Moving on to Fury, I'm not sure if this is connected to the state's history in some way, or whether it's just a fairly generic potential nickname.
The former Arizona Coyotes may well go into next season as the Utah HC or Utah Hockey Club while the new owners search for the right name. It sounds like there are some big guns hired to tackle the task.
"Not sure if this is out there, but Smith Entertainment Group has hired Doubleday & Cartwright, who has handled branding for numerous pro teams, to work on name/logo for new Utah NHL team."
