Mikko Rantanen was only just acquired by the Carolina Hurricanes, but with no long-term deal in place, all signs are pointing towards another trade at the deadline.

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind for Mikko Rantanen, as he was traded by the Colorado Avalanche to Carolina before representing Finland at the Four Nations Face Off tournament.

After losing Jake Guentzel in free agency this past summer, the Hurricanes are clearly nervous about history repeating itself with Rantanen, and that's led to plenty of speculation that they could move Rantanen if he doesn't lock in on a long-term deal in the next few days.

According to Insider Elliotte Friedman, the long-term deal has officially been offered, with the reported offer from GM Eric Tulsky exceeding $100 million in total value.

«The Hurricanes met with his representatives face-to-face. The Hurricanes made an offer. I believe that offer is into the nine digits. It's a big, big offer.»

Now, Frank Seravalli is convinced that the team will not keep him unless he locks in, and with no deal reported yet following their meeting, all signs are pointing towards another trade incoming.

«The Canes pulled off the blockbuster deal almost exactly one month ago, snatching Rantanen from Colorado on Jan. 24. One month later, they haven't come to an agreement on an extension. Rantanen's production has slipped in Carolina, too, with just two points in six games - even if his underlying numbers suggest he's played just as well (or better!). Carolina won't be afraid to flip him if they can't extend him, and the closer we get to March 7 without a deal, the more likely it is. Chicago already retained half, so Carolina could knock Rantanen down to just a $2.313 million cap hit for the remainder of this season if they wanted. Juicy!»

With just over a week to go until the deadline, there's very little time for things to change, and with the potential of another team retaining salary to bring his cap hit down to $2.3 million this season, it would be a shock at this point if he wasn't dealt over the next week.
