Coyotes Ditch Alex Galchenyuk Days After Signing Him to New Deal
I'm not sure anyone could have seen this coming. A very bumpy ride in the NHL for Alex Galchenyuk just got rougher as the Arizona Coyotes have announced they will be terminating his contract not even two weeks after signing him to a one-year deal for the 2023-24 season.
"The Arizona Coyotes have placed forward Alex Galchenyuk on unconditional waivers for purposes of terminating his contract. The Club will have no further comment at this time." - Arizona Coyotes
The "no further comment" part of the statement makes it sound as though something happened that led to the termination of Galchenyuk's deal. However, there is no further information at this time.
Since being drafted 3rd overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 2012 and having some decent seasons there, Galchenyuk has bounced around from team to team the last few years. In fact, 2023-24 would have been his third separate stint with the Coyotes. He's also played for Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Ottawa, Toronto, and Colorado. In late June, Galchenyuk's rights were traded to the Nashville Predators as the Colorado Avalanche picked up Ryan Johansen. The Preds chose not to make him an offer, making him a free agent on July 1st. That's when he signed his latest deal with Arizona. According to Coyotes reporter Craig Morgan, the NHL Players' Association is looking into this matter.
