The Edmonton Oilers have struggled to find their best form early in the season, and on Monday night, their worst nightmares came true, as captain Connor McDavid left the ice just minutes into their eventual 6-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Since that point, there have been worries that McDavid could have sustained a long-term injury, and while there's been no official update from the Oilers organization, Insider Frank Seravalli has now given a best case scenario.
According to Seravalli, the best case scenario for McDavid is similar to Aleksander Barkov's recent injury with a high-ankle sprain, with the Florida Panthers captain missing just 8 games over the first month of the season. Given how bad the Oilers looked after losing their captain, this would be an incredible outcome if he missed just weeks of action, because No. 97 was ruled out quickly, ultimately heading back to Edmonton to get a proper diagnosis on the situation.
We've seen McDavid miss time before, and on that occasion it was Leon Draisaitl that stepped up and led the team, so while it's never good to see a star of the game on the sidelines, if the Oilers can get that type of play from No. 29 again, as well as a much needed improvement from Zach Hyman, they'll be in safe hands. For now however, the Oilers organization is taking their time to understand the injury before giving a proper update, so it's very likely that the 2024/25 season could be hanging in the balance over the injury diagnosis.
