After being acquired by Carolina earlier in the season, Mikko Rantanen seemingly doesn't want to extend, and now it appears that could lead to a second blockbuster, with the Hurricanes likely not wanting a repeat of the Jake Guentzel situation from 12 months ago.

The Carolina Hurricanes gave up significant assets to get Mikko Rantanen, and unsurprisingly, the reports from Elliotte Friedman have revealed that GM Eric Tulsky has offered Rantanen a massive deal to stay long-term.

As of right now however, all indications are that No. 96 may ultimately want to try his luck on the open market this summer as a free agent, and as a result, it's given the front office plenty to contemplate with the trade deadline less than two weeks away.

Now, Insider Frank Seravalli has pitched in with his latest update on the situation, and according to the Daily Faceoff reporter, if the team have offered the money for him to stay and he is yet to accept a deal, it may force the hand of Tulsky and owner Tom Dundon.

"So I would lean toward, if you've truly put the dollars on the table, and you've put what you believe is a fair eight-year deal on the table. And he's not committing to you or is non-committal, my money would be on them flipping him."

Ultimately, the Hurricanes went through this a year ago with Jake Guentzel, who would quickly ink a deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the summer, and if no deal is inked in the next few days, the overwhelming expectation is that they'll look to see what they can get from him with even more retained salary ahead of the trade deadline.
