Don Cherry gives his thoughts on Shane Wright not being drafted 1st overall
When the Montreal Canadiens came to the podium on Thursday night, the hockey world waited to find out who the 1st overall pick would be. Unlike in previous years there was no clear cut number 1 pick, but most pundits felt Shane Wright was the top choice. The Canadiens ultimately didn't feel that way and selected Juraj Slafkovsky instead.
Don Cherry is a native of Kingston, Ontario, where Wright played his junior hockey, so on his Grapevine Podcast Cherry gave his thoughts on Wright being passed over.
I watched the draft and I'm absolutely in shock. Shane Wright goes 4th, I mean that is unbelievable to me. I hope this Kent Hughes knows what he's doing cause he's going to get all the blame.
I was absolutely shocked, shocked is the word, that they didn't pick Shane Wright. I still think he's the number one.
I'll tell you one thing, Kent Hughes better be right on this [Slafkovsky]. He better be right on him because they will be waiting for him, those fans are tough down there
Cherry has always been known to have a preference for Canadian players, but in this instance Cherry is 100% on point. If Shane Wright ends up being the best player in this draft there will be questions for years to come. A choice like this could drastically impact the path of the Canadiens rebuild.
