On July 13th when the Edmonton Oilers signed Jack Campbell to a 5-year $25,000,000 contract, many people felt it was the missing piece of the Oilers puzzle. The Oilers had finally signed the goaltender who was going to make a difference when it finally mattered. Fast forward less than six months and it appears the Jack Campbell experience is a complete failure.

The Oilers have played 24 games, and sit in the final Wild Card in the Western Conference. Of those 24 games Campbell has only seen the net 13 times this season. Jack has a 7-6-0 record this season, but that is more flattering than his numbers suggest. Campbell has only allowed 2 or less goals twice this season.

Campbell's stat line continues to get worse as the season goes on. Campbell's goals against average currently sits at 4.12 and his save percentage sits at .872. If it weren't for the emergence of Stuart Skinner, who knows where the Oilers would sit.

Now according to Frank Seravalli there is at least some conversation around the Oilers contemplating demoting Campbell to the AHL. After Cal Petersen was demoted earlier this week there is little risk that Campbell would be claimed, especially with 4 years remaining at $5,000,000 per season.

If something doesn't change in Edmonton soon they very well could be looking at a potential buyout of Campbell's contract. This deal which was viewed as a great signing has quickly become one of the worst deals in the NHL.
