Maple Leafs top prospect decides to not sign with the team
When the Maple Leafs selected Matthew Knies 57th overall, they had high hopes for him. But not even they could have expected that he'd have the season he has. Knies was a point per game player at the University of Minnesota this year and even represented Team USA at the Olympics. If the draft was completed today, it's likely Knies would be a top 10 selection.
The Maple Leafs had hoped to get Knies signed to an NHL deal and hopefully get him into meaningful games down the stretch but according to Elliotte Friedman, Knies has other ideas.
Matthew Knies has informed TOR he will return to Minnesota next season. Unfinished business, chance to win it all with the Gophers.
Knies' advisor, Matt Federico, says that TOR has no reason to be concerned about his future with the organization.
It sounds as though Knies still intends on signing with the Maple Leafs, but after a Frozen Four semi-finals elimination it seem Knies wants to go back for a second run at a National Championship.
Kyle Dubas shared the following:
Minnesota and coach Motzko have a great program so we know he will continue to develop as he has.
The Maple Leafs would have loved to add Knies on an entry level deal to help offset their salary cap issues, but they'll likely have to wait until next year for that opportunity now.
