NHL embarrassed by Dadonov situation looking at making major change
During the National Hockey Leagues' trade deadline last Monday, a trade between the Anaheim Ducks and Vegas Golden Knights was ultimately voided when it became clear that Evgeni Dadanov's 10 team no-trade clause had not been honoured correctly. Dadonov's 10 team no-trade list wasn't accurately communicated to the Knights properly when he was acquired from the Ottawa Senators last summer; they were led to believe that Dadonov's no trade-list had not been submitted correctly and therefore was not valid.
Upon further review the NHL revealed that Ottawa had forgotten to communicate the player's no-trade list, not that it wasn't submitted on time, leading to the trade being voided.
According to TSN's Pierre Lebrun, the Dadonov debacle could be the reason we see a change in the no-trade rule very soon
Here's the thing. A no-trade list is submitted solely between a player agent and the club. The league and the NHLPA do not keep track of a no-trade list. I think the NHL will push for a change where the league's central registry, and maybe the Players Association, gets a copy of these no-trade lists.
The change could be that the NHL decides that the central registry, along with the Players' Association, gets a copy of no-trade lists so that something like this never happens again. This would also make it easy for teams to view this information and track this information.
This is a bad look for the Ottawa Senators, but even worse for the NHL in general. It also createa an unfair and uncomfortable position to put Dadonov in. It is forcing him to go back to a team that paid a second-round pick to get rid of him.
On the bright side, Dadonov had a goal and an assist in his first game with the Knights since trade had been voided, bringing his point total to 30, including 16 goals and 14 assists with Vegas this season.
