Referee calls one of the most embarrassing penalties you'll see all season
The New York Rangers faced off against the Colorado Avalanche in what could be a Stanley Cup preview. The game was hotly contested with the Avalanche eventually eeking out a 3-2 shootout victory. The back and forth game featured a combined 90 shore between that two teams.
One play that caught everyone's attention in the first period was a high sticking penalty against Alexis Lafreniere. The penalty ultimately ended up being a non-factor in the outcome of the game, but it highlighted a need for possible change in the league's rules.
On the play it's clear Lafreniere's stick (white tape) comes nowhere close to Cale Makar. But the referee on the ice immediately makes the call that Makar was high sticked. Because there was no blood the referees were unable to review this play.
This brings to question as to whether or not the league should expand their review process. Should the league focus on getting things right? Or should the human element simply be an accepted fail rate?
