Last week, the Anaheim Ducks and Arizona Coyotes game made headlines for the Coyotes' Jay Beagle violently beating down on the Ducks' Troy Terry in a rout of a game. The Ducks were leading 5-0 with 5 minutes remaining in the third period when Trevor Zegras was digging for a loose puck in the crease, inciting the scrum where Beagle fought and unwilling Troy Terry.

Tyson Nash made more headlines when he commented on Beagle's actions while referencing the Ducks earlier Michigan goal, saying

Well, that's the problem, sometimes, with these young players. You want to embarrass guys, and you want to skill it up? You better be prepared to get punched in the mouth.

Today, while appearing on the Cam and Strick Podcast, Nash doubled down on his comments. He shows admiration for the talented goals of Zegras and the Ducks, but adds that if they continue to chirp a team when they're down, the team will respond.

I guess if there was one thing I would change is that people have jumped all over me about, is that I was trying to, you know, downplay and and be negative on the skill aspect of the game which is laughable because if people actually took the time and again all these media people you know have jumped all over me and everyone that I've called and talked to the they're all like, oh my god, I'm so sorry, you're right.

I only watched, the 15 second snippet and I made a comment. I'm like, yeah, that's because that's what you guys do. We showed his original lacrosse goal, we showed plays throughout the entire game. Look at this guy selling a skill, selling the game because I love it, but there's a progression to the game and there's things that happen along the way in the game, the smiles, the smirks, the chirping between the benches, this kid chirping, and I love it and I absolutely love this kid.

I love that he chirps. I love his swagger love his cockiness, but all I'm saying, is, when you're gonna do all that be prepared to get punched in the mouth, Jay Beagle told Zegras, multiple times in that game to settle down and knock it off. Otherwise, you know and what happened the kid didn't.

Listen, the kid just continues to go on, it's five, nothing. It's a team, by the way, that lost 11 straight games, before this coming in and they're skating around against the Tucson. Road Runners, who had 11 American hockey league players in their lineup and their skating around. Like, there's a globetrotters and it's embarrassing.

Beagle's actions and Nash's commentary has really blown this situation out of proportion into some trademarked Twitter discourse of the roles of skill and «grit» in hockey. More so, that grit or designated enforcers no longer have a place in the league.

While I'd agree that enforcers no longer belong, the larger implication here is that there is no conflict between skill and toughness in hockey, but rather a balance that must exist in a competitive contact sport.

Nash has reiterated that the Ducks' players were taunting the Coyotes while up 5-0, and described that when professional athletes are being embarrassed in a contact sport, they're likely to respond physically.
