The Toronto Maple Leafs are yet to make one free agent signing official
The Toronto Maple leafs were very active during the first couple of days the free agent market opened, but they still haven't made one signing official.
After the Toronto Maple Leafs opened free agency by addressing their need for defence and goaltending, they of course started filling in the gaps they still had with depth signings. However, it seems as though the Leafs haven't made one of their free agent signings official as of yet. This comes after there were rumours Jani Hakanpaa would never play again.
Now, according to Leafs Latest on X Hakanpaa may not be joining the Leafs organization after all.
It's now been 15 days since the Leafs were excited to sign defenseman Jani Hakanpää. The team has still NOT confirmed the signing for Hakanpää, while they have for every other free agent they signed. It's still unknown if Hakanpää will even sign with the team due to his lingering knee injury, which could potentially force him to retire altogether. The Leafs have reportedly been doing a lot of research on the injury and want to get it right, and it's still expected he will sign with the team, but as of today, nothing has been confirmed for Hakanpää.
We'll see how it plays out in the coming weeks, I suppose.
It's very odd that general manager Brad Treliving would acknowledge the signing in an interview, but the team would acknowledge the signing on any of their social media. Could this be the end of Jani Hakanpaa in the NHL? Only time will tell
