Noah Dobson, one of this year's top trade targets, changed agents ahead of a possible deadline move by the New York Islanders.

The Islanders have been able to bounce back from a disappointing start to the season and are now only four points away from the second wild-card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, having won seven out of their last ten games.

The team is looking to make a push for the playoffs, and a recent report from RG.org stated that the Isles' general manager, Lou Lamoriello, could be looking to add one of the best players reportedly available on the trade market-Elias Pettersson-by parting ways with Noah Dobson:

"Well, the team is in the playoff hunt. This is not a team that is building for the future, if you will, at this point, with where they're at right now."

"[Pettersson] is available for trade, and that is a piece the team is willing to part with in order to get that scoring presence they have wanted for three seasons," a source confirmed.

It would not just be Dobson in the deal. There would have to be more money in terms of players going back to Vancouver for the $11.6 million to balance out. The Canucks might have to retain the deal too."

Then, Elliotte Friedman confirmed the Islanders weren't actively shopping him.

Here's what Friedman said on 32 Thoughts:

"I don't think he's generally been out there. There are too many teams that hadn't heard it, so I'll say this: If Dobson was discussed, he was discussed in a specific case or two or however many it was. There was one specific team or one specific player that the Islanders were looking at, and if they had gone down the road on that trade, then Dobson might have been included. I think that's the fairest way to look at all of this."

However, a new development occurred that could change everything: Dobson just changed agents.

While doing so doesn't mean he'll get traded, it's quite the timing to make such a decision.

The 4 Nations Face-Off is starting tonight, and a few trades could be announced during the NHL's two-week break.

Dobson is also set to enter free agency at the end of the current season. His RFA status will expose the Islanders to offer sheets, a scenario they'd prefer to avoid.

Even if Dobson changing agents doesn't lead to a trade, it'll lead to a contract extension. Stay tuned.
