Former first round pick terminates contract due to disagreement with management
Two months after signing a contract to play for Vasterviks IK in HockeyAllsvenskan, former first-round pick Quinton Howden is now a free agent.
Due to a disagreement with Vasterviks IK's management on how they were going to utilize him this season, Howden decided to terminate his contract and will now look elsewhere to play for the 2023-24 season.
"Quinton Howden is leaving Västerviks IK just two months after signing a contract with the second tier Swedish club.
The 31-year-old Olympic bronze medalist reportedly did not agree with management on how he should be deployed." Hockey Worldwide on Instagram said.
Howden, the 25th overall pick in 2010, has been out of the National Hockey League since 2017 and has made stops in Belarus, Russia, Sweden, Germany, Finland and France in recent years.
The Winnipeg native split time last season between Jukurit in Liiga and Grenoble in the French league. With Jukurit, Howden had one assist in ten games, while with Grenoble, he managed to put up eight points in 16 regular season games, as well as three points in 12 playoff games.
It's unclear what will come next for Quinton Howden, but the expectation is that he will stay somewhere in Europe for the season. The 2023-24 season is set to begin in many of the major European leagues in the coming days, so we could see him pop up with a new team very soon.
