Yesterday the City of Tempe held their referendum, one of the key topics on the ballot was a new arena and entertainment district for the Arizona Coyotes. The NHL and Gary Bettman specifically had very high hopes for the market. A vote of yes, would have secured the league's position in the market for at least 30 years.

However, a vote of no, was rumored to potentially send the Coyotes rushing out of the City in search of a new home. After months of canvasing the league was hopeful they'd finally secured the team's new home. Like everything else in the franchise's history, this too would be an embarrassment.

Last night the NHL found out that their proposal fell short by over 12%, as the league wasn't even able to secure 45% support.

This leaves the Coyotes with very few options. Remain in a College Arena as the laughing stock of the league or finally pull up roots and leave the State. Recent reports have state Gary Bettman was also considering circling back to the new owner of the Phoenix Suns and trying to strike a new deal to retrofit his arena for an NHL team.

Gary Bettman released the following statement:

The National Hockey League is terribly disappointed by the results of the public referenda regarding the Coyotes' arena project in Tempe. We are going to review with the Coyotes what the options might be going forward.

This would be considered a major loss, but the Coyotes have never made money in Arizona and this could be the beginning of a fresh start for the franchise.
