During a recent edition of the 'Missin Curfew' podcast, Flames defenceman MacKenzie Weegar became the first player to publicly state that Calgary needed to make a coaching change.
Sutter reportedly didn't see eye-to-eye with many players on the roster, including Mikael Backlund. Later in the podcast, Weegar would go on to say that Sutter and Backlund would get into 'Fuck You' shouting matches.
The Flames' season didn't go how anyone expected, especially after the additions of Jonathan Huberdeau and Weegar from the Florida Panthers last summer. They finished the year ninth in the Western Conference and fifth in the Pacific Division with a 38-27-17 record.
As for Weegar, he'll begin the first year of an eight-year extension he signed with Calgary prior to the start of the 2022-23 season. His new contract will see him earn $6.25 million per season and keep him with the Flames until the summer of 2031.
Couple interesting things from Weegar in this clip.
He is the first player to publicly say that the Flames needed a coaching change.
And he mentions that Darryl Sutter would go after Backlund sometimes in video sessions and they would have some f*** you matches.@MissinCurfew pic.twitter.com/SrnNF7XTas Robert Munnich (@RingOfFireCGY) May 8, 2023
