Trade talks surrounding Flames forward have reportedly gone quiet

Back in June, news came out stating that several Calgary Flames players who are set to become unrestricted free agents in 2024 are leaning towards not re-signing with the team.

Among those players that were mentioned were Noah Hanifin, Tyler Toffoli, who was dealt to the New Jersey Devils, Elias Lindholm and Mikael Backlund.

Instead of letting them walk for free next summer, General Manager Craig Conroy has been working the phone lines trying to strike a deal. But according to Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960, trade talks surrounding Mikael Backlund have gone quiet recently.

Backlund, 34, has spent his entire career in the National Hockey League with the Calgary Flames, who selected him in the first round back in 2007. He's gone on to appear in 908 games across parts of 15 seasons, putting up 492 points (185 goals, 307 assists).

The Vasteras, Sweden native seems like the most logical choice to become the next captain of the Calgary Flames. But with him not intending on re-signing with the organization and even telling a Swedish media outlet he turned down an extension, it doesn't seem likely that he'll have on the 'C' on his chest and that they'll go with someone else who plans on being there long-term.
