Tyson Barrie went unsigned all summer and was forced to settle for a professional tryout with the Calgary Flames, which he signed a week before training camps around the National Hockey League opened.
After a strong training camp and preseason games with the Calgary Flames, it appears that Tyson Barrie's professional tryout has become successful.
In a post on social media on Thursday afternoon, Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli announced that the Calgary Flames and Tyson Barrie have agreed to terms on a one-year contract for the 2024-25 season worth $1.25 million USD.
Barrie, 33, has been given ample opportunity to prove himself to the Calgary Flames' coaching and management staffs and has been rewarded with this contract today. While Barrie will likely start the year on the Flames' third defensive pairing, it looks like he may get some powerplay time as well.
Derek Wills of Sportsnet 960 radio in Calgary shared the Flames' powerplay units on Thursday and Tyson Barrie was on the second along with Mikael Backlund, Blake Coleman, Connor Zary and Rasmus Andersson.
The Victoria, British Columbia native appeared in 41 games for the Nashville Predators last season where he registered 15 points (one goal, 14 assists), 16 penalty minutes and was a minus-ten. He also appeared in one game during their first round series against Vancouver, tallying one assist.
It's going to be a tough season for the Calgary Flames as they'll more than likely be on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoff picture in the Pacific Division and Western Conference. If Tyson Barrie plays well between now and March 7th, he could become a valuable trade chip for the Flames and could bring back a mid-round pick.
