Brendan Lemieux earned his tough-guy reputation with his grit and his involvement in plenty of on-ice incidents since the start of his career, notably for bitting the Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk a few years ago.
Last summer, he signed a one-year, $775K contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, but hasn't played in the NHL this season so far, spending all his time in the AHL, where he scored 2 goals in 12 games with the Chicago Wolves.
In a new development, Frank Seravalli revealed that the Hurricanes placed Lemieux on waivers with the purpose of contract termination.
The 28-year-old forward was drafted 31st overall by the Buffalo Sabres in 2014. Since then, he scored 74 points, including 36 goals, in 307 regular season games for the Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, and Hurricanes.
He also competed in eight playoff games, tallying only one goal in the 2021-22 run with the Los Angeles Kings.
The Carolina Hurricanes are fighting an intense battle for first place in the Metropolitan Division against the New Jersey Devils and the Washington Capitals.
While they are having a great season, getting rid of a forward with grit ahead of the playoffs could be a risky move. If injuries strike the Hurricanes' lineup, they could've been happy to rely on him.
Or maybe the organization has something else planned.
By freeing up cap space, general manager Eric Tulsky could be looking to make a move on the trade market soon.
With Lemieux's contract off the cap space, the GM would nearly have $1 million to maneuver ahead of the trade deadline.
As for the player, it'll be interesting to monitor if another organization looks to offer him a contract for the rest of the season.
