For the past 12 months, Colorado Avalanche fans have been anxiously awaiting the return of captain Gabriel Landeskog, with the veteran forward stating ''it's a matter of when, not if' he returns. Despite all the injuries early in the year, we're still yet to see him back on the ice, raising questions over his future.
Now, a trusted source within the organization has revealed a setback for the 31-year old that could ultimately cost him any hopes of a return to the NHL after dealing with three major surgeries since the team won the Stanley Cup back in the 2021/22 campaign.
Without Landeskog, the team have struggled with their depth over the last two years, and after being such a valuable member of this organization, both on and off the ice, he's critical to any hopes they have of a Stanley Cup in 2024/25. When he was told to retire recently by a fan, Landeskog emphatically told him no, suggesting that he still believes a return is very possible this season. Fans remain highly optimistic that the franchise icon will be back on the ice in the near future, but this latest report certainly comes as a major worry.
With so many players out this season beyond Landeskog, it's tough to judge how good this team could be based on their play, but if this report turns out to be untrue and he does return, it's safe to say that optimism remains about this teams chances of their second Stanley Cup under his reign.
