San Jose Sharks defenceman announces retirement at 29-years-old
According to Tommi Seppala of Yle Urheilu, a Finnish-based media outlet, San Jose Sharks defenceman Markus Nutivaara has been forced to retire from professional hockey at the age of 29 due to an injury.
"San Jose Sharks defenseman Markus Nutivaara, 29, call it a career because of hip injury.
Nutivaara signed a one year deal with the Sharks last summer but played only one pre season game.
Nutivaara played 275 games for CBJ & FLA." Seppala said.
The Oulu, Finland native reportedly suffered the hip injury in practice the day before Florida's season opener back in October 2021, tried to return, playing in one game, but ultimately opted for surgery ending his season.
He then became a free agent in July 2022 and signed with the Sharks, only appearing in one pre-season game in September before missing the entire 2022-23 campaign due to lingering issues with his hip.
Nutivaara skated in 275 career games in the National Hockey League with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Florida Panthers, recording 71 points (17 goals, 54 assists), 42 penalty minutes and was a plus-26.
