Over the weekend, the Montreal Canadiens brought back Jeff Petry, along with other assets, in a three-team trade with the Penguins and Sharks which saw Erik Karlsson go to Pittsburgh.

In the last few days, several insiders have suggested that the Canadiens may flip Jeff Petry before the start of the 2023-24 season, retaining 50% of his salary to maximize the return. The Penguins are currently retaining 25% of Petry's salary, meaning that a team acquiring the 35-year-old would only be paying 25%.

According to Chris Johnston of TSN, one Western Conference team is reportedly interested in trading for Jeff Petry, that being the Dallas Stars.

"A team to keep an eye on is Dallas," said Johnston. "I know they're a team that has had interest in Jeff Petry over the last couple of years. The Stars, like a lot of teams in the league, don't have endless cap space. There's been a multitude of reasons why they haven't been able to act on a trade prior to now. All of the sudden, the conditions are in place. Maybe the trade doesn't happen by training camp, maybe it doesn't happen by the start of the regular season. But certainly, in these next few months, the Canadiens can look at what's out there for Petry, and whether it makes sense to move him or not."

Petry, a native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, has two years remaining on his contract and if a team is to acquire him at only 25%, all they'll be paying him is $1,562,500.

There's no question that any contending team would love to have Petry at $1,562,500 and if he's not traded by the start of the 2023-24 season, then he could become a hot commodity before the deadline.
