The 37-year old has been with Detroit for the last two seasons, and while his numbers don't show great production, he's a fantastic leader on and off the ice and is beloved within the Red Wings locker room.
With McLellan taking over, players like Petry become crucial to keeping the team together and moving forward towards the goal of a Stanley Cup, and if they can make it to the post-season, his presence on the ice will become even more important for a young team.
It's unclear whether or not Petry will have an every day role with Detroit upon his return, with the team rolling out three very balanced pairings in recent times, but if they can get him back and at 100%, he'll be crucial as the team look to finally break their playoff drought as Steve Yzerman's rebuild looks to come to an end in 2024/25.
