It's a big day for Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman. The team has announced they've signed young, hulking defenceman Moritz Seider to a new deal that will keep him in the city for a long time.
Moritz Seider has signed a seven year contract with the Detroit Red Wings worth $8.55 million per season. The deal makes Seider the second highest paid player on the Detroit Red Wings, just under teammate Dylan Larkin.
The money on Moritz Seider's new deal is right around what he was projected to get before the contract was signed. A comparable would be Owen Power of the Buffalo Sabres, who on a contract that pays him $8.35 million a year.
Moritz Seider, 23, has already completed three seasons in the NHL, bringing him to the end of his entry-level contract. After being drafted sixth overall by the Detroit Red Wings in 2019, he's put up 21 goals and 134 points in 246 regular season games, and has no trouble throwing around his six-foot-three, 205 lbs. frame.
The Detroit Red Wings go into the 2024-25 season hoping to improve on last year, and hoping to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2015-16. The pieces are certainly there. Now it's up to Yzerman and his coaching staff to get the players to take the next step.
