The NHL Alumni have announced the passing of former defenceman Larry Trader.

We have some sad news to share in the hockey world on Thursday morning as the National Hockey League has announced that former Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues and Montreal Canadiens defenceman Larry Trader has passed away at the age of 61.

Trader was a fifth-round pick of the Detroit Red Wings in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft and went on to appear in 55 games with them during the 1982-83 and 1984-85 seasons.

After his time with the Red Wings, he was dealt to the St. Louis Blues where he had a brief six-game stint across parts of two seasons before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens during the 1987-88 season.

Following that year, Trader spent one year in the American Hockey League with the Binghamton Whalers before heading over to Austria and Italy where he'd play the final five seasons of his professional hockey career.

"The NHL Alumni Association is saddened to learn that Larry Trader has passed away at the age of 61.

Larry was drafted in the 5th round of the 1981 Entry Draft to the @DetroitRedWings. He played two seasons with the team before moving on to the @StLouisBlues, and finishing his NHL career with the @CanadiensMTL. In total, Larry played in 91 regular-season games, scoring 18 points." The NHL Alumni said.

The thoughts of everyone here at Blade of Steel are with Trader's family and friends at this difficult time.
