Leon Draisaitl is reportedly keeping his options open as contract discussions can begin in the summer with the Edmonton Oilers

Edmonton Oilers duo of Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid have been a scoring powerhouse for close to ten years in Edmonton since getting drafted in 2014 and 2015.

The German native Draisaitl gave an interview to Sportsnet's Mark Spector, discussing his potential contract negations as well as McDavid's.

"At the end of the day, he's [McDavid] going to do what's best for him, and I'm going to have to do the same thing for me."

I'm sure Draisaitl would like to finish the job by getting to lift the cup with McDavid by his side, his comments indicate he might be thinking of other options.

Playing behind the best player in the world would be a balancing act for your ego. Draisaitl is clearly in the conversation of one of the best players in the NHL but often gets left out by hockey pundits because he is in the shadow of Mcdavid.

The 28 year old and his camp are able to begin contract discussions with the Oilers on July 1st as he would be entering the final year of his contract. Leon has some hardware collected to bring into the discussions winning an Art Ross trophy, Hart trophy, and Ted Lindsay award.

Draisaitl is one of the top players in the NHL and the salary on his next contract will reflect that. Time will tell if Leon will sign the big ticket in Edmonton or move on to new adventures.
