Former 5-time Stanley Cup Champion facing criminal charges
There are a few things that are guaranteed in life, nothing is certain except death and taxes. Unfortunately if you don't prioritize that latter you'll end up in some legal trouble. That's exactly where 5-time Stanley Cup Champion, Esa Tikkanen currently finds himself.
Tikkane is regarded by many as the best hockey player to ever come out Finland, but the Finnish superstar is currently facing Criminal charges in Finland. Tikkanen, who is now 58, has been charged with aggravated tax fraud.
According to court filings, the alleged offenses facing Tikkanen occurred between 2015 and 2019. The charges relate to money Tikkanen made abroad and didn't claim. Tikkanen has denied any wrongdoing and offered the following comment to Ilta-Sanomat :
I have not committed any offence, it is a matter of disagreement with the tax authorities.
Tikkanen had previously had $178,000 worth of assets seized by authorities. However, those assets have since been returned. There has been no court date set for the trial.
Tikkanen played 877 career NHL games with 7 different teams. Tikkanen won 4 Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers and 1 with the New York Rangers.
