The Edmonton Oilers have fared well in the absence of their captain Connor McDavid, and now, No. 97 has dropped a major update on his potential return.
Over the past few days, the Edmonton Oilers have had to continue turning their season around without Connor McDavid, as the captain went down with an injury against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Since that point, the team have won two straight games, with Insider Elliotte Friedman revealing that McDavid's injury is likely to keep him out for a 'couple of weeks'.
Now however, McDavid himself may have revealed his return date, as he gave an update to reporters after a skate on Monday morning with the team ahead of their clash against the New Jersey Devils.
McDavid spoke following the skate. He said his ankle is feeling pretty good after testing it again this morning. He did not rule out playing by the weekend and added that he and the medical staff are taking things day-by-day.
During the interview, McDavid revealed that while he is officially day-to-day, he has not ruled out playing this weekend, which would be a very quick recovery given the time frame of 2-3 weeks for a return. This would be a huge positive for the Oilers, but after they got above .500 last night with a victory over the Calgary Flames to take them to 6-5-1, it's a fine line to tread as the team want him back on the ice but also don't want to rush him back to potentially risk further injury.
In recent years, we've seen McDavid get healthy very quickly, or at least he has become very accustomed to playing through pain, but just 13 games into the new season, it's a risk the team may not want to take. Regardless, keep a close eye on this situation as a Saturday night showdown with the Vancouver Canucks awaits as we could be getting a return of No. 97 to an Oilers team that is ready to catch fire.
