Former NHLer Sheldon Souray was as tough as they come, he would hit, fight and do whatever was asked, now he's opening up about the injury that almost ended his life.

The old style of hockey was rough and tumble. Enforcers were employed on almost every team and would do whatever they were asked to do. Sheldon Souray exemplifies that to a T. He would hit hard, fight when it was needed and block shots. Now the former Edmonton Oiler is detailing his most gruesome injury, one that nearly cost him his life.

During his time with the Oilers, Souray badly hurt his hand during a fight, something that kept him out long term. During a sit down interview with Brantt Myhres on the Unhammered Podcast, Souray discusses how that injury nearly ended his life and that the Edmonton Oilers thought he was faking it because he had asked for a trade to another team.

Souray mentions that he broke his hand in a fight, it ended up being a bad break, a boxers fracture'. He then informed the Oilers that he wanted to go to Los Angeles to get surgery done on it. They denied the request, he went and got the surgery anyway.

Time goes by and Souray is in recovery, the pins start coming out of his hand one day, so he pushes them back in. Next thing he knows he's in the hospital with an infection. Souray asks the nurse attending to him if they need to amputate his hand, she says no, they're not worried about his hand, but rather stopping the spread of the infection so it doesn't get to his heart.

Later on, one of the assistant trainers comes to see Souray to inform him that the Edmonton Oilers management group think he's faking the injury because he no longer wants to play for the team.

The doctors were trying to stop the spread of the infection and the Oilers don't believe Souray is injured? No doubt there would be reports and medical documents supporting this. What if his life had ended as a result of this infection? To me, this sounds very negligent.

Glad Souray pulled through and is here to tell his story, but this makes the Edmonton Oilers Organization look bush league
