It must be a bit of a whirlwind few months for Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers. After a horrible start to the 2023-24 season, Draisaitl and the Oilers went all the way to game 7 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final before being eliminated by the Florida Panthers. Now, with little room to breathe, comes the question over his new contract. A new article shows his agency playing some hardball.
In an interview with a German media outlet Eishockeynews.de, Jiri Poner of Spectrum Hockey--who negotiates Draisaitl's contracts together with Mike Liut from Octagon Hockey--said that while his client still has another season remaining on his current contract, he wants it done before training camp gets underway for 2024-25.
While his quote gives Edmonton very little time to get Draisaitl's signature on a new contract, Poner added he's confident it will get done.
The final season of Draisaitl's current deal carries a cap hit of $8.5 million. Poner told the interviewer that he remembered the "s--t storm [Former Oilers GM} Peter Chiarelli had to endure when he gave Leon the contract," but firmly believes it was a steal for Edmonton in the long run.
