A report states both the Edmonton Oilers and the NHL are investigating an alleged incident involving Oilers assistant coach Paul Coffey during game against Canucks

While the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks are gearing up for game 2 of their second round series of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, there's word both the team and the NHL are looking into an alleged incident from game 1 at Rogers Arena. The allegation centres on Oilers assistant coach and Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Paul Coffey.

There has been talk of the alleged incident since shortly after game 1 ended. A fan said Coffey made a racist gesture aimed at a person who was sitting behind the bench. At that point in the game, the Oilers were leading 4-1.

"The Oilers were leading & Paul Coffey turned to make racist hand gestures toward a fan's turban, mocking his head. The Canucks game back and won in regulation. Karma is real. Hope Paul is held responsible for his actions."

If anyone from the arena has footage, incident occurred sometime during dead play between 9:28 and 9:32pm PST.

Would be nicer to have a public video as well, other than just the team's own footage they may not make public."

The Hockey News says the Edmonton Oilers and the NHL are investigating in order to determine what, if anything happened. What they are hoping to determine is whether there is clear video evidence of the alleged incident.

Coffey was suspended for three games from the Greater Toronto Hockey League in 2014 for using a "racial slur." It was while he was a coach with the Toronto Marlboros midget AAA team. No one would say what, exactly, Coffey said to get him suspended.
