Pair of Oilers could become cap casualties before trade deadline
Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers are coming off a weekend sweep, winning back-to-back games against the Seattle Kraken and the Pittsburgh Penguins and sit second in the Pacific Division.
With the trade deadline on Friday, there's no doubt that Edmonton Oilers General Manager Ken Holland would like to add to his roster, potentially a significant piece, but the team's salary cap situation could make that difficult.
According to CapFriendly, the Oilers only have $519,116 in remaining cap space and if they're wanting to add, they'll have to move some money out.
The Fourth Period is reporting that Edmonton Oilers forward Warren Foegele and defenceman Cody Ceci could become cap causalities before 3 p.m. ET on Friday. Foegele is in the final year of his contract with a cap hit of $2.75 million, while Ceci has one year remaining on his deal beyond the 2023-24 campaign with a cap hit of $3.25 million.
"With very limited salary cap space, Oilers GM Ken Holland will almost certainly be forced to ship out a player and the likes of forward Warren Foegele and defencemen Cody Ceci and Brett Kulak are the likely candidates.
Foegele is in the final year of his contract, Ceci has one more year left on his deal, and Kulak has two more seasons left on his. None of the three have any no-trade protection as part of their contracts." Edmonton has been linked to several of the top available players ahead of the deadline by The Fourth Period, including Jake Guentzel of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pavel Buchnevich of the St. Louis Blues, among others.
