This is the kind of thing to show kids who have dreams of playing professional hockey some day. David Savard, defenceman with the Montreal Canadiens, left it all on the ice last night after losing his skate blade on a penalty kill against the Buffalo Sabres.
With Montreal leading 2-1 in the third period, the Sabres were on a powerplay. Savard parked himself not far from his own net in order to disrupt shots and passes. Savard first made a block on a big slapshot that you could tell was hurting him. Not long after, he takes another to the ankle and again appears to be in pain. It's also obvious that shot knocked his skate blade loose. However, Savard continues to defend, despite the fact that he can barely stand. His actions got a lot of praise from teammates and fans once the whistle finally went.
The Canadiens went on to win the game 3-1. While it is still very early in the season, Montreal has managed a 3-1-1 record with low expectations. Buffalo, on the other hand, is 2-4-0. The young up-and-coming team was hoping for a better start.
Update: Savard will miss time.
