After tons of speculation over what the Montreal Canadiens would do regarding their goaltending, a new development has made things a lot clearer with a contract extension.
Sam Montembeault has basically been appointed the new number one goaltender in Montreal with a new three-year contract worth $3.15 million per season.
Despite playing on a team that's in full rebuild mode. Montembeault has a 5-3-1 record on the season, with a 2.73 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage. The Quebec-bon netminder is in his third season with Montreal, and fifth in the NHL.
The new contract for Montembeault is pretty much a guarantee that Jake Allen is on his way out of Montreal as soon as a suitable trade partner can be found. Unfortunately for the Canadiens, Allen is struggling this season with a 3-5-1 record, a .903 save percentage, and a goals against average of 3.59. Meanwhile, the Habs have been giving games to third-string goaltender Cayden Primeau in 2023-24, presumably in the hopes that he will become Montembeault's backup when Allen is dealt.
