In the second period, Brendan Gallagher on on his belly in the crease seeing if he could tuck one in for his Montreal Canadiens. Florida Panthers goalie Anthony Stolarz kept his left leg and foot against the post as much as possible, seemingly keeping the puck out of the net. However, it was announced by the referee that the play would be reviewed to see if the puck crossed the goal line.
After a couple of minutes reviewing the play, the referee comes to centre ice and surprises many by saying the puck crossed the line and the goal was good. The team celebrated, of course, while cheers broke out across the arena. Then, a few seconds later, the same referee returns to centre ice and said there had been a "miscommunication" and the puck had never crossed to goal line. No goal. You can watch the entire sequence below where the referee announces a good goal, and then returns to correct himself before Florida even asks for the opportunity to challenge.
At this point, it's not even about whether the puck did or didn't cross the line. This just comes off as completely inept and/or incompetent.
