It was reported earlier this summer that the Jets' star goaltender was no longer interested in signing an extension with the team and that his next contract will be with another organization, as stated by Murat Ates of The Athletic.
Ever since that report, rumours have been swirling about potential landing spot for the 2019-20 Vezina Trophy winner and on Thursday, he was linked to the New Jersey Devils.
The 30-year-old has been one of the best goaltenders in the NHL for a number of years now, as Rupp says. He's kept the Jets in contention for quite a while now and he's set to get a big payday next summer, whether that be in Winnipeg or another organization, like New Jersey.
New Jersey has plenty of depth in between the pipes with Vitek Vanecek and Akira Schmid, as well as prospects Nico Daws and Tyler Brennan. Adding Hellebuyck may force the Devils to part with one of those prospects in any deal with the Jets. The Devils' window to contend for a Stanley Cup is just opening and adding a goaltender like Hellebuyck doesn't come around often and would make them one of the favourites in the entire NHL to win the Stanley Cup.
