It was a scary moment during the hockey game between the Utica Comets against the Laval Rocket this past Friday evening in the province of Quebec. A stoppage in play with less than six minutes remaining in the third period took place after what appeared to be a potentially serious injury to the Utica Comets. Swedish forward Filip Engaras was skating down the right side of the rink, attempting a sharp turn toward the net when things took a frightening turn.
As Engaras was driving to the bottom of the right circle, he ran hard into the body of former Utica defenseman Zack Hayes. The contact sent Engaras spinning out of control and awkwardly into the backboards. His left shoulder and the side of his head seemed to absorb most of the contact as Engaras lay motionless for a brief moment before the live game feed cut away, adding to concern about his condition.
Jason Shaya, the voice of the Comets and Director of Communications, didn't hesitate to express worry in his play-by-play shortly after the incident. For viewers watching at home, suspense was built as medical personnel rushed onto the ice with a stretcher in tow. Luckily, Shaya said just moments later that Engaras, however it was a hard hit, did appear alert while he was assisted off the ice. This was a small relief as the forward was playing his 100th AHL game.
The following morning, Comets General Manager Dan MacKinnon updated everyone on the condition of Engaras, reassuring everyone that doctors had checked his head and neck for serious injuries but found none. Engaras was released from the hospital on Saturday, further lessening the drama associated with the incident. His fortuitous recovery was nonetheless a sobering reminder of how much physical risk players are capable of incurring on the ice.
Although the moment was scary, Filip Engaras had managed to score his first of the season earlier, providing some hope for the Comets after they'd fallen behind 3-0. Justin Dowling added a late power-play goal but the Comets couldn't complete the comeback, falling 4-3. The continued struggles for Utica dropped them to 0-5-0-0 for the season. They then looked to regroup for their rematch with Laval on Saturday night at home this time, but that proved not to help them one bit either, as they once again dropped another game to Laval, this time with the final score being 4-3. That now places Utica with an abysmal record of 0-6-0-0 to start the year.
