Florida fell behind 4-2 at the end of the second period but leaned on their past playoff success to come out in the third on a mission.
With 13:02 left in the third, the game was tied up 5-5. Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov and Gustav Forsling scored less than two minutes apart.
Over the last 8:10 of the third, the Panthers unleashed a bombardment on Shesterkin. The NHL credited 24 shot attempts, all of them by Florida. The Rangers goalie stood tall, stopping the remaining shots he faced in the period.
It took only 5:35 into the extra frame for the game to end. Rangers forward Alex Wennberg deflected Ryan Lindgren's shot from the point past Florida's Sergei Bobrovsky.
There was some scrambling going on behind the Panthers bench after the goal, as they had their team looking at every angle to determine if it was worth challenging.
Insider Elliotte Friedman took to his social media account to post as the Panthers were pondering whether to challenge or not.
"Whatever Panthers are upset about here, there's an automatic league review.
Wennberg scored to win itfor now"
In the end, Panthers head coach Paul Maurice decided there was nothing worth a challenge and the team headed down the tunnel in defeat. The two teams will be back in action for Game 4 on Tuesday night, at the Amerant Bank Arena in Florida.
