The incident in question occurred during Monday night's game between the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils. With 30 seconds remaining in the second period, Rempe went to make a hit on Devils defenceman Jonas Siegenthaler, but his elbow comes up and makes contact with the Swiss blueliner's head.
Rempe was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct on the play for elbowing, while Kurtis MacDermid of the New Jersey Devils was handed a ten-minute misconduct for his actions following the hit. MacDermid was trying to get at Rempe, but had to be restrained by an official.
Given that Matt Rempe is not a repeat offender, there's a very good chance that if he's handed a suspension, it will be less than five games. However, Montreal Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher, who was also not a repeat offender, elbowed someone very similar to Rempe and was given a five-game suspension.
Rempe, 21, has made an immediate impact on the New York Rangers in his first ten games in the National Hockey League, dropping the mitts four times, including his first game, which came at the 2024 Stadium Series against Matt Martin of the New York Islanders. In ten games thus far, the Calgary native has two points (one goal, one assist), 54 penalty minutes and is a plus-three.
