The last couple of years have been rough for former-first round pick Mark Pysyk. He missed the entire 2022-23 season due to injury and was hopeful of an NHL return this year.

In the summer, Pysyk signed a professional tryout contract (PTO) with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but suffered an injury early on in training camp.

When he was health enough to return, which came earlier this month, he signed another PTO, this time, with Pittsburgh's AHL affiliate.

After going pointless in eight game, along with eight penalty minutes and a minus-three rating, Pysyk has been released from his PTO and is now an unrestricted free agent once again.

"The Penguins have released defenseman Mark Pysyk from his professional tryout."

The 31-year-old was selected 23rd overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and has gone on to appear in 512 games with the aforementioned Sabres, Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars, where he's put up 104 points.

It's unclear at this time where Pysyk plans to play next, whether that be in Europe or with another AHL team.
