Sidney Crosby expects contract extension to be signed before opening night
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby expects his contract extension to be signed before opening night next month.
After a report came out late last week saying that Sidney Crosby was unsure about re-signing with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the future Hall of Famer squashed those rumours at the NHL Player Media tour in Vegas.
During an interview with Matt Larkin of Daily Faceoff on Monday, Sidney Crosby said that he's optimistic that a contract extension will be signed and announced by the time Pittsburgh opens their 2024-25 season on October 9th against the New York Rangers.
"No, no," Crosby said, "I'm pretty optimistic it's going to get done [before the season]. I don't know what day specifically, but it's been really positive. It hasn't been a difficult process at all."
Crosby went on to say that while he's unsure how many years he has left as a professional hockey player, he's in a good place and is as excited to get to Pittsburgh for training camp as he was during his rookie season in 2005-06.
"It's hard - you don't really know the trajectory of everything and how you're going to feel mentally, physically," Crosby said. "All you can do is really just each year evaluate it and go from there. But when you get to this point, you understand [the end] is more of a reality with every year you play. You just check in with that through the year or every year and evaluate it. So that's how I look at it."
He went on to add, "But I feel really good. I'm as excited about going to training camp as I was my first year. So the passion and that sort of thing are all there. As long as that's there, then you want to put in the work and do everything that it takes to be successful. And hopefully it can be at least a few more."
As Crosby enters his 20th season in the National Hockey League, all eyes will be on him as the Penguins look to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2022. Despite being in his late-30s, Crosby isn't showing any signs of slowing down, registering back-to-back 90+ points campaigns, which is great news for a Penguins team looking to remain competitive.
