Midway through the second period, as the New York Islanders fell down 4-0 to the Tampa Bay Lightning, Islanders' defenceman Alexander Romanov was looking to spark his team with a display of physicality.
When a scrum ensued around the Islanders' net, Romanov grabbed Corey Perry, and put his total body weight into a WWE-style takedown.
Unfortunately for Romanov, he felt the most of his forceful takedown. After Perry had been knocked to the ice, Romanov wasn't far behind, slamming his head on the ice as he fell. After the play, Romanov left the game momentarily, but it is unknown if he sustained an injury. Hopefully for the Islanders, Romanov will be healthy at least in time for the playoffs.
As regular season games begin to have more serious implications for the standings, and eventually as the games turn into playoff games, look out for more of these highly physical, high intensity games. It's hockey's best time of year.
