The Toronto Maple Leafs were once considered a vault. No news would leak out of Toronto. When news finally broke it was often the Maple Leafs themselves who would break the news.

It's been 7 days since the termination of Kyle Dubas and things have drastically changed. After days of leaks, today was no different. Today however those leaks came at the expense of the Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment Board members.

According to a leak today, one of the thing Dubas was trying to streamline was his inability to speak directly to the board. This led to delays, which could last up to 3 days to get an answer about possible moves. This includes potentially costing the Maple Leafs a top defenseman.

The frustrations in the approval process with the board were real and raised by Dubas throughout the season.
I am told by several sources that the fact that there was a process wasn't the problem, but rather the timing was what frustrated Dubas. An example given was that Dubas would work on something, and would get it to a point where he would need approval. He would then need to get Shanahan up to speed so he could get approval from the board (and to be clear we are talking about significant moves only) and that approval would take up to 3 days to come back. In that time, as you can imagine the opportunity may well have passed. Dubas wanted to pursue big name, high-end defencemen and I am told that this process specifically precluded him from doing so.

The more information that continues to leak out of Toronto, the more dysfunctional the situation seems. This might make it difficult for the Maple Leafs to add the experienced GM they want to add so badly.
