Yesterday afternoon the Toronto Maple Leafs made the decision to place struggling goaltender Ilya Samsonov on waivers. The move came after Samsonov gave up 6 goals on just 20 shots Friday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Maple Leafs had done everything in their power to help Samsonov find his game, but to no avail.
With Samsonov on waivers the Maple Leafs were left with a hole to fill in their net. With Joseph Woll injured and their insurance policy, Martin Jones already in the NHL, the Leafs were forced to turn to a rookie sensation.
This morning General Manager Brad Treliving made the roster move to officially recall Dennis Hildeby.
This season with the Marlies, Hildeby has played 15 games posting a record of 7-5-3. Hildeby has a GAA of 2.20 and a .919 save percentage. Hildeby also played professionally last season in Sweden before making the transition to North America this season. The Maple Leafs are hoping that Hildeby will continue his upward progression, at least long enough for Joseph Woll to get healthy.
Hildeby, 22, is expected to get the start against the Anaheim Ducks when the Leafs start their Western Conference road trip.
