48 hours after a costly mistake in his defensive zone allowed the St. Louis Blues to score a goal, Matthews was back on the ice hoping to have a better impact on his team.
The Toronto Maple Leafs were looking to end their loss streak yesterday against the Boston Bruins, but unfortunately, Matthews made another huge mistake, giving the overtime win to the B's.
In the third period, head coach Berube decided to send both Matthews and Marner on the ice for most of the last seven minutes of the game. As highlighted by Kevin Bieksa after the game, the two players were exhausted going into the overtime period:
And with David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand on the ice for the Bruins, you know they'll capitalize on any mistakes they are given.
That's exactly what happened when Matthews tried to pass the puck to Marner. However, he couldn't reach him, giving a 2-on-1 to the Bruins, who capitalized.
Check out how it went down here:
Despite a five-point combined tally for Matthews and Marner, it's safe to say that the Leafs must do better. They suffered their first overtime loss of the season, and now have a 4-4-1 record, good for the fourth position in the Atlantic Division, under the Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Buffalo Sabres.
The Leafs will be in Winnipeg to face the Jets tomorrow, looking to bounce back and avoid losing a fourth straight game.
