A number of well-known names are still available on the free agent market with less than two weeks to go until teams around the National Hockey League open up training camp. Among those that are still unsigned is veteran defenceman Mark Giordano, who is hoping to play next season, which would be his 19th in the league.
Late this week, Mark Giordano's agent Ritch Winter was a guest on Flames Talk and gave an update on his client trying to find a new team for the upcoming year.
Winter told Flames Talk that he's had discussions with Calgary, the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs, but they still haven't found a fit for the 40-year-old defenceman. He added that the Flames weren't too interested in bringing back Giordano, who spent 15 seasons with the team, including eight as their captain.
Giordano, who is nearing the end of his professional hockey career, wants to win a Stanley Cup and that's a big priority for him as he searches for his next team.
In 46 games last season for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Giordano had nine points (three goals, six assists), 49 penalty minutes and was a plus-ten.
The Toronto native may have to go to training camp on a professional tryout contract in order to prove he's still capable of being a valuable asset to a contending team. But with camp's opening up in less than two weeks, as mentioned, Giordano may have to make a quick decision here on what he wants to do and where he wants to play for the upcoming campaign.
