One name that has been rumoured to potentially be on the move this summer is Mitch Marner. Marner will be entering the final year of his contract next season that comes with a cap hit of $10.9 million. Marner's contract also includes a full no-movement clause that could make things tricky for Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving.
While it's not a certainty that the Toronto will move Marner this summer, there will be interested teams that'll be calling Treliving over the coming weeks to see what it could cost and already, a handful of teams have been linked to the Maple Leafs forward.
According to The Hockey News, Mitch Marner has been linked to the Anaheim Ducks, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Islanders, Pittsburgh Penguins and Utah.
Marner, 27, would be a solid fit for any team around the National Hockey League, but of the five teams he's been linked, two stand out - the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks.
With the Penguins, Marner would have the opportunity to be reunited with his former General Manager, Kyle Dubas and play for a competitive team that features future Hall of Famers including Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. The Penguins are looking to break a two-year drought of missing the post-season and Marner could be a key piece to get them back to that point.
For the Chicago Blackhawks, they're looking to take the next step in their rebuild and begin the process of being a competitive team. The Blackhawks already have a young core led by Connor Bedard and hold the second overall pick in next month's draft. Marner would have the opportunity to play alongside Bedard and form a lethal duo in the NHL for years to come.
It'll be interesting to see what develops on the Mitch Marner front in the coming weeks and if Brad Treliving receives any offers he can't refuse for the former fourth-overall pick.
