Alex Ovechkin shares hilarious admission that proves he's a regular guy
Alexander Ovechkin has never been shy about speaking his mind as a member of the Washington Capitals but his discussion about beer consumption may turn some heads.
Alexander Ovechkin may be the greatest talent to ever come out of Russia to play in the NHL and he is well on his way to breaking Wayne Gretzky's goal-scoring record, but the 38-year-old superstar has an honest yet shocking confession that will likely surprise nobody; he's a fan of beer.
Ovechkin was quoted from the Russian Machine Never Breaks with the following:
«I like the taste of beer. I like light beer, sometimes I drink Guinness.»
When pressed further Ovechkin continued
«I can't imagine a [player] who says he doesn't drink he quit'. You can take a break for a certain time, but after the game, 2 to 3 cans of beer with pleasure. Its useful. In Washington, we have a refrigerator with beer in the coaching room. It's normal.»
While it's true that many NHL players do enjoy the odd adult beverage, it's also true that many players have admitted to struggling with alcoholism of some level so Ovechkin's take for himself may be honest, but expressing that all players enjoy an alcoholic drink of sorts is rather careless, even if it was an honest mistake.
Hockey can be a gruelling game and if the Great 8 believes that teammates coming together after going to battle with each other and having a drink is necessary, that's his opinion. He may speak for the majority of the players across the league, but he should be mindful of those who continue to struggle with essentially a disease that may hamper them for the rest of their lives.
