Alex Ovechkin has been arguably the hottest player in the NHL over the past few weeks, but now, he may be set for a stint on the sideline after a massive collision.

Through 18 games this season, Alex Ovechkin has turned the clock back for the Washington Capitals, tallying an incredible 15 goals and 25 points, putting him in the league lead for goals.

With Wayne Gretzky now sitting just 26 goals ahead of him, confidence is incredibly high around the league that The Great 8 will be the NHL's all-time goal leader by the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Unfortunately, he may set for a stint on the sidelines after a knee on knee collision with the Utah Hockey Club's Jack McBain during their victory on Tuesday night.

The collision looked brutal on the ice, and after the game, Head Coach Spencer Carberry had no update, revealing that the team captain will undergo further evaluation to determine the severity of the knee injury.

On X shortly after the incident, Dr. Harjas Grewal, who often tweets about NHL injuries had this to say:

Time off depends on grade and although it is hard to gauge grade by video, there wasn't an extreme amount of inward stress so hopefully grade 1 or 2 and max 4-6 weeks out

Will add that a torn ACL is also possible but highly unlikely IMO

Given how bad it looked on the ice, an absence of maximum 4-6 weeks in the worst case scenario of an MCL sprain is positive news, but if it can be any less than that, the Capitals will certainly consider themselves very lucky.

After the incident, it didn't take Tom Wilson long to respond, as the Capitals enforcer quickly went to work standing up for his fallen captain.

Given how huge of a storyline this is for the NHL in 2024/25, it's safe to say that everyone in the league will be hoping for a quick recovery from Ovechkin, and if that's the case, history will be ever closer.
