There was word last week that a defenceman who had an excellent season in the AHL had left the Winnipeg Jets and signed a four-year deal in his home country of Germany. Now, we know why.

Leon Gawanke, drafted in the 5th round in 2017, put up 20 goals and 45 points in 68 games with the Manitoba Moose in 2022-23. Despite that, he has yet to play in the NHL and indicates he's tired of it.

"There's no way I'm going back there for another year. That's it now."

"I worked my ass off there for four years...and wasn't rewarded. That's frustrating, of course. Especially when I see who all gets a chance there."

Gawanke explained that his recently signed contract with Adler Mannheim in Germany can be terminated if the Jets send him elsewhere.

"There's still hope that they'll trade me"

Gawanke currently does not have an NHL contract. However, as an RFA, his rights belong to the Winnipeg Jets. The 23-year-old will have to wait for a trade, or until be becomes a free agent at 25 if he won't return to Winnipeg.
